SONGWRITING

Songwriting can be one of the most difficult and frustrating things you will ever do as an artist, and it can be one of the most rewarding events you will ever have as an artist, especially when that first song is completed, and, hopefully, either you or another artist decides to record and it plays on the radio. For those who are just beginning this process, it can sometimes feel like shadow boxing–you can see what you want to hit but every time you swing, all you come up with is air.Songwriting is a never-ending search to find your musical voice. Writing a song can be broken down into two parts–the melody and the chords. Usually you will find yourself working on one first, then adding the other and listening to how they work together. The main thing is to always listen to your inner voice and follow wherever you ear leads you. Don’t rule out your initial ideas, go with the flow and never judge yourself too harshly. Save your evaluations till you have a workable foundation. Simple songs are just as important as complicated or clever songs. Remember, every composition is a learning process that will help to develop your writing skills. Always carry a notepad with you. You never know when a phrase or an idea may pop up. Write it down so you’ll always have it to go back to.
